Zoo-Silkscreen

This is a silkscreen of a photo of a flamingo at the San Francisco Zoo. The original photo was altered in photoshop to make the pinks stand out over the normal black and white value. This photo is a portrait of the flamingo, altered to create a fantasy portrayal of it, in a style similar to that of Andy Warhol.
I did the process in two similar but different ways.

Zoo-Environmental

These are environmental portraits of a giraffe and a grizzly bear at the San Francisco Zoo. The shape of the giraffe's neck shows shape and form, and the placement of the grizzly bear's placement in the photo shows balance (Rule of Thirds). The giraffe's environment shows that it is not in the wild, but fenced in in a civilized area, eating bark off a tree.. The grizzly bear appears to be in the wild, as shown by the rocks and grass, but a bit of fence is still visible.

Zoo-Formal

This is a photo of a mandrill at the San Francisco Zoo, in the form of a formal portrait. I like that he is looking right at the camera, making eye contact like a human would.

Texture

These photos are detailed nature shots created to emphasize the element of texture. They also utilize the elements of color, emphasis and balance through the Rule of Thirds and contrasting subjects and backgrounds.

Great Landscape

This image has balance because of the asymmetry of the cliff and the trees. The Rule of Thirds is also used because of the trees on the line intersection and the convergance of the two halves of the image. Bright colors are also used to emphasize the textures of the cliff and trees.

This is a photo of a character from an Asian language. It is more obviously a smiley face, but the element of looking at something in two ways is still present.

6 Image Photo Essay - Accidental Smileys

These images are part of a photo essay documenting accidental faces I saw in my home, at school, and in other places. They are close ups, and they are related in theme. Balance is used in most of the images because of the symmetry or asymmetry of the faces. Also, shape is used to distinguish the parts of the images that make up the faces.

Chapel

This is a photo of wooden bars blocking a confessional booth-turned-storage room. The shadows promote emphasis and the repetition of the bars shows line and pattern. Overall, this image is an abstract close-up of architecture. It shows the details of the woodwork and promotes the beauty of the chapel.

Stop Motion Video

This is a stop motion series of the progression of a burrito being eaten. I was actually eating eat when these photos were taken. I would take a bite and shoot, and it took about 35 photos to get the entire sequence.

Mercy Street

This image was taken in a study center. The comfortable stance of the student symbolizes the comfortable atmosphere of Mercy. The position of the subject create asymmetry (balance).

Action Photograph

This photo was taken in the middle of a kickball game. The subject is the pitcher, and he is in mid-throw. The goal of this image was to create a freeze effect by stopping motion. The Rule of Thirds was used to add to the effect of the pending throwing motion. Since the subject is moving toward the center of the frame, the feeling of movement is created. The rather bland background gives the spotlight to the subject, but the texture of the grass keeps the feeling of being in the outdoors and playing a real game.

Artificial Movement in Photoshop

This photo was taken as a candid, but originally, it was frozen. In photoshop, I blurred the background to create a sense of movement towards the center of the photo. The Rule of Thirds (balance) is created by the position of the subject and her movement toward the center of the frame.

My Choice

This photo is a part of my Sutro Baths series. It is of the stairs leading up to the parking lot, which is a simple scene, but the complementary colors and space created from the angle of the shot make it interesting and pleasing to the eye. The size and length of the stairs as well as the angle of the shot makes the woman at the top look miniscule, which is an example of proportion, or more accurately, disproportion.

Photoshop Altered Image

This photo, too, was taken at Sutro Baths in San Francisco. I like it because it is altered to look like gold chunks sitting at the mouth of a tunnel, when in reality, the gold chunks are rocks. The texture of the rocks brings dimension to the photo and makes it interesting. The emphasis of the rocks, the writing in the tunnel, and the different details of the photo really pop. The rocks are unified because obviously, they are all rocks. This photo is obviously altered, and the changes make you notice things you wouldn't normally notice.

Photo in the Style of Diane Arbus - Receiving

This photo was taken on the streets of Seattle, Washington. We were giving a jug of milk to a homeless man when I captured this image. Although I do not know this man well, I can guess that he doesn't smile like he does in this photo very often. There is a story behind this image, and in a way, it is an environmental portrait. It makes me happy that I made someone smile in the course of my work. This image also has good composition because of the value, which emphasizes the emotion, happiness, in this image. This image has balance because it is asymmetrical, and the subject of this portrait is emphasized.

Actor Headshot - Nancy Pometta - Angry

This is a headshot for an actor, Nancy Pometta, depicting her being angry. This image is a great example of value because of the high contrast and the fact that it is black and white. Emphasis on the emotion in her face is a prevalent principle. Her zoomed face makes the viewer focus only one her, not on the background.

Environmental Portrait- Boudin's Baker

This photo was taken at Boudin's Bakery in San Francisco. It was a rather quick shot because I had a very short time to capture the spectacle, the giant alligator made of delicious sourdough bread! There is a sense of movement and rhythm because the line of the alligator moves your eye along the photo. Pattern is also created by the consistent "scales" of the alligator's back, and the texture of the scales is pleasing to the eye. However, this is an environmental portrait of the baker because he is in his element with his dough, in his uniform, and holding and admiring his work.

Self Portrait

The object of this photo project was to create a self portrait that utilizes design elements and principles as well as reveals something about ourselves. This image uses the element of shape and form because my figure is accentuated. The principle of balance is used because of the asymmetry of my head. This image reveals through the editing that I love color, and the setting discreetly provokes curiosity and reveals that I am a rower.

Scanner Art

This is a compiled image consisting of scanned photos and objects. It utilizes the principle of balance because of the overlapping photos, and the element of line becomes prevalent because of the edges of the photos.
